Challenge

A government customer managed data across several systems, pipelines, and reporting environments. Technical teams understood individual components, but the organization lacked a shared view of data ownership, lineage, definitions, and sensitivity.

Microsoft Purview was used to organize metadata, document lineage, support classification, and establish a business glossary. We focused first on useful and understandable information. That encouraged adoption and prevented the catalog from becoming another system that teams had to maintain without seeing value.

We also helped clarify roles for ownership and stewardship. This gave the customer a practical model for keeping the information current as systems and reporting needs changed.
